Near the Condition Census
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-7, BB-18, R.3, MS61 PCGS Secure. Bowers Die State I, the usual die state of this variety with two extensions from the end of the left ribbon. Central weakness is minimal on this well-struck 1795 dollar that features exceptional centering with full obverse and reverse borders. The surfaces exhibit myriad minuscule marks that limit the grade. Both sides are brilliant and untoned with semireflective fields around the lustrous devices. Chief Coiner Henry Voigt and his team got this one right, as there are no adjustment marks visible on either side. This highly appealing 1795 Three Leaves dollar will make a nice addition to a type set or specialized collection.
The second edition of the Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia records seven Mint State examples among the notable specimens section for the variety. The present piece makes an eighth example, appearing in the Bowers list at its former AU58 grade level. The top examples of the variety include coins graded MS66 PCGS, MS65 PCGS, MS65 NGC, MS64 PCGS with a silver plug, MS64 PCGS, MS63 Uncertified, MS61 PCGS, and MS60 Uncertified. In all grades, the B-7, BB-18 silver dollar is relatively plentiful with survival estimates ranging in the 500 to 800 coin range. However, only eight are known in Mint State at the present time. This is an extremely important opportunity for the early silver dollar collector. (NGC ID# 24WZ, Variety PCGS# 39973, Base PCGS# 6852)
