This VF25 specimen is of course not able to rival the mint state 1796 coin sold at the Pogue auction but it has sufficient detail to be a pleasing coin for the grade. Ironically if the population census is correct the 1796 population exceeds that of the 1804 heraldic eagle 25 cent piece that followed the 1796 coin after a eight year hiatus. In spite of that fact the 1796 coin commands a greater premium at each grade level than the 1804 quarter. Both are national treasures indicative of the growth of this country as it sought to take its place on the world stage of commerce.
